Do you enjoy coffee?  Led by coffee cupping guru Rob Fitzgibbon, this program is like a wine tasting, but with coffee. We will begin with an informal half hour presentation, covering coffee as an agricultural commodity, how it’s grown and processed, how it’s been consumed throughout history, and an introduction to concepts such as roasting, aroma, taste and mouthfeel. We then do a fun interactive exercise in which participants try three different coffees and document what they smell and taste using stickers and a flavor wheel. We end by reviewing our shared perceptions of taste and aroma, have Q & A session and finish the coffee. The purpose is to to pay attention to coffee - to gain more appreciation for the complexity and wonder of a drink that we typically take for granted in our day to day life. Questions? Join our new local history discussion group in the Local History Center led by local history librarian, Julie Travers, and historian and author, Bob Booth. Each month we'll have a short presentation and then open it up for discussion. January Topic - Gloucester Daily Times Journalist, Maggie Dwyer (1856-1942) ____________________________________________ The History Exchange is a Gloucester-centric approach to understanding the past and its meanings. Often, American history—as taught or encountered in the media—is presented as something that occurred elsewhere: remote both in time and distance, and conducted by the famous and powerful. That is one way to look at the past, but it may mean little to us in our own time and place. Fortunately, Gloucester has an identity and history of its own. There is virtually nothing that has happened in America that did not involve Gloucester people or find an echo in Gloucester’s own story. In some instances, Gloucester has led the way, and its people have been among the change agents regionally, nationally, and worldwide. The Gloucester History Exchange: Local History Discussion Group will explore and discuss events and people in Gloucester’s history, particularly those that are not well known. Brief presentations will be made by subject-matter experts, followed by conversations. Sawyer Free Library invites high school students and their families to a special workshop focused on exploring and applying to summer enrichment opportunities. Jorge Marinez, an Independent Career & College Consultant, will guide students through the process of finding reputable academic, career-focused, artistic, and leadership programs that align with their interests and goals. Attendees will learn how to research opportunities effectively, understand eligibility requirements, manage deadlines, and prepare strong application materials. The workshop will also highlight free and low-cost programs, share tips for crafting compelling essays, and provide strategies for staying organized throughout the application season. Whether students are looking to build skills, explore potential career paths, or strengthen future college applications, this presentation will offer practical tools to make the most of their summer. Space is limited, so registration is required for this program. Students ages 11-19 are welcome to attend, but this program is recommended for students ages 14-19 (grades 9-12). Please join us for an interview with Peter Swanson, author of Kill Your Darlings, The Kind Worth Killing, Eight Perfect Murders, and more!  Peter is the Sunday Times and New York Times best selling author of 11 novels, including The Kind Worth Killing, winner of the New England Society Book Award, and finalist for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger, Her Every Fear, an NPR book of the year. His books have been translated into over 30 languages, and his stories, poetry, and features have appeared in Asimov’s Science Fiction, The Atlantic Monthly, Measure, The Guardian, The Strand Magazine, and Yankee Magazine.
